National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 19, and frankly, this is one holiday that does not ask much of us. There are no decorations to hang, gifts to wrap, or complicated traditions to remember. You just need some ice cream in Estes Park, a few people you enjoy, and enough time to debate the merits of more than 40 flavors. If you are looking for family-friendly treats or easy things to do with kids in Estes Park, we would say this particular celebration is practically planning itself.
More Than 40 Flavors and No Wrong Answer
The Munchin’ House has been part of downtown Estes Park since 1968, so we have seen several generations of families work their way through this decision. Some people study every flavor before committing. Some walk through the door already knowing what they want, and some kids make their final selection based entirely on color. All three methods are perfectly respectable.
We serve more than 40 flavors of locally made, small-batch ice cream made with premium, all-natural ingredients. You can stick with a familiar favorite, try something with a little Colorado personality, or ask us what sounds particularly good that day. We also offer sorbets and sugar-free and dairy-free choices, although the available flavors can change. Nobody in the family has to order the same thing, which eliminates at least one unnecessary vacation negotiation.
A Scoop Is Only One Way to Celebrate
A traditional scoop is always a solid National Ice Cream Day decision, but we have other ideas. You could go with a handmade shake or malt, an old-fashioned Rocky Mountain soda float or an affogato made with vanilla ice cream and a hot shot of espresso. Then there is our espresso shake, which is useful when you want dessert but also have several more hours of vacation left to accomplish.
The Munchin’ House sits at 130 E. Elkhorn Avenue, right next to the Riverwalk in downtown Estes Park. That makes us an easy stop after exploring the shops, spending the morning outdoors, or reaching the point in the afternoon when everybody could use a break. Ice cream does not need to become another item on a tightly managed itinerary. Sometimes the nicest part of the day is simply letting everyone choose a treat and sitting together long enough to enjoy it.
A Pretty Good Sunday Plan
National Ice Cream Day became an official celebration in 1984, but families have understood the basic idea for much longer than that. A summer afternoon, a cold treat and a little time together make a reliably good combination. We have been lucky enough to be part of that tradition in Estes Park since 1968.
So, what should you order Sunday? We cannot answer that for you. With more than 40 flavors, shakes, malts, floats and espresso drinks in the running, choosing is part of the fun.
